The power of the heat mat is not really important. You should focus on getting the right size, which is more important. The heat mat should cover about 1 / 3 to 1 / 2 of floor space and be positioned on one side so that it creates a hot side hot / cold side and allowing the gecko to thermal -regulation .. Thus, in the viv you described, you should get a carpet of heat around 17×11 “One like this would work: get all http://www.reptilelifestyle.co.uk/heating/heatmats/komodo-heat-mat-17x11Ils heat from the ground so you do not need a heat bulb on top of a leopard gecko.

I always recommend a heat bulb with all the creatures that are controlled by a thermostat. It is a far superior method of heating and provide a thermal gradient. By the dimensions, I assume you have a wooden vivarium, good choice, heat mats are not intended to be placed inside any enclosure in which an animal can come into contact with him and it is quite unnecessary to put on the outside of a wooden vivarium as it will not heat through the woods. If you get a 100watt bulb color is controlled by a thermostat, it will heat the substrate and provide a nice hotspot, offering, as I said a thermal gradient is also very good. Good luck with your new pet.
